AniCura joins the “World AMR Awareness Week” Global Campaign

Antibiotics can save your pet’s life, but only if we let them stay powerful. Today AniCura joins the “World AMR Awareness Week” Global Campaign to raise awareness and encourage action to tackle the emergence and spread of drug-resistant bacteria in the veterinary care industry.

AniCura, one of Europe’s leading providers of high-quality veterinary care for companion animals, has an ongoing strive to combat antimicrobial resistance as it is a threat to world health among pets as well as humans by challenging the overuse of antibiotics.

Today, drugs, antibiotics are taken for granted as an effective way to treat infections and stop diseases or illnesses from spreading or even death caused by bacteria. But in reality, due to the increase in antibiotic resistant bacteria and we might face a future where antibiotic medicines lack the effectiveness to treat humans as well as pets.

Antibiotics can save lives. But only if we let them stay powerful. That is why a global action plan was endorsed at the Sixty-eighth World Health Assembly in May 2015 and why we celebrate World Antimicrobial Awareness Week, November 18-24.

AniCura joins the Global Campaign, to raise awareness and encourage action to tackle the emergence and spread of antibiotic-resistant bacteria in the veterinary care industry as well. AniCura aims for no more than 5% of the patients the company treats to receive systemic antibiotics by 2030. With 4.5 million veterinary consultations annually, these actions can have a significant impact.

AniCura combats antibiotic resistance through daily efforts across all 15 European markets via its quality program where for instance, ensuring wiser use of antimicrobial and securing proper infection prevention and control play major roles. To ensure wiser use, yearly measurement since 2016 has been performed and to further accelerate efforts AniCura launched guidelines in 2021, addressing the most common indications of systemic antibiotic use. The guidelines included for example surgical antibiotic prophylaxis, wound infections and abscesses, gastrointestinal disorders, skin infections, urinary tract infections, dental procedures, and lower and upper respiratory diseases.
