The objective of the course is to provide a practical, clinical, and diagnostic approach to managing oral pathologies. The fundamental steps of a routine oral procedure will be covered: clinical evaluation, acquisition of preparatory intraoral radiographies preceding dental extractions, execution of proper dental prophylaxis, and ultimately, extraction of individual teeth. 

DAY 1

9-9,45 Oral and periodontal examination: what is normal and what is not (nomenclature, numbering system, periodontal evaluation and dental charting) 

9,45-10,30 Dental scaling and polishing: what we need to use and how to do better  

10.30-11,00 Coffee break 

11,00–11,45 The basics of dentistry, intraoral radiology techniques: skills and tricks 

PRACTICAL  

12,00-13,00 Head and full mouth evaluation, dental charting: check the head and the mouth and sign every abnormal finding; probe every single tooth 

13-14 Lunch break  

PRACTICAL 

14.00-15.30 Scaling and polishing and familiarized with dental radiology to complete oral examination (acquisition)  

15,30-16,00 Coffee break 

16.00-17.30 Scaling and polishing and familiarized with dental radiology to complete oral examination (acquisition)

DAY 2

9,00-9,45 Intraoral radiographs interpretation: follow the lines, normal radiological anatomy (orientation and description) 

9.45-10,30 Intraoral radiographs interpretation: follow the lines, abnormal findings and decision making 

10,30-11,00  Coffee break 

11.00 -12.00 Interactive Session: Intraoral Radiographic Interpretation (case discussion and final decision-making) 

12,00-12,30 What to evaluate before extractions: indication for extraction  

12,30-13,00 Dental extraction techniques of single teeth: close extraction techniques for single rooted teeth, 2 rooted teeth (what to know, what to avoid) 

PRACTICAL 

14-15 Radiographic acquisition(s) of teeth that will be extracted 

15 -16 Practice in the extraction of single teeth in dogs/cats  

16 -16,30 Coffee break  

16,30 -18 Practice in extraction of single teeth in dogs/cats  

DAY 3

9,00-9,40 Open extraction techniques of single teeth in dogs: description and considerations 

9,40-10,10 Open extraction techniques of single teeth in cats: description and considerations

10,30-12,30 Practice in open extraction of single teeth in dogs 

12,30-13,30 Lunch  

 13,30-15,30 Practice in open extraction of single teeth in cats 

The course is tailored for veterinarians involved in oral health care, in order to improve essential knowledges in veterinary dentistry. Preference may be given to candidates who have a substantial case load in veterinary dentistry. Candidate should have basic knowledge in veterinary surgery and a minimum of 2 years in general practice.  

The aim of the course is to give the skill for correct evaluation, diagnosis and treatment of the more frequent cases in veterinary dentistry.
